Sri Lanka and Japan Expand Employment Opportunities for Youth
Sri Lanka has taken another significant step in its collaboration with Japan to provide employment opportunities for its youth, particularly in the nursing sector. This initiative is part of a broader bilateral agreement between the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE) and the International Manpower Development Organization (IM Japan). Under this program, a new group of young Sri Lankans has been granted access to job placements in Japan, marking another milestone in the long-standing partnership between the two nations.
On July 14, a special event was held at the SLBFE headquarters, where nine women were issued air tickets to travel to Japan. These individuals are set to depart on July 16, as part of the latest batch of trainees joining the Japanese workforce. The ceremony was attended by a delegation from IM Japan, highlighting the continued commitment of both countries to this collaborative effort.

During their visit, the Japanese representatives met with Mr. Senarath Yapa, Additional General Manager (International Affairs) of SLBFE, to discuss further expansion of job placements for Sri Lankan youth. The discussions focused on Japan’s Technical In-Service Training Program and Specialized Skilled Worker Program, which aim to enhance the quality of the workforce through practical training and skill development.
The Japanese officials expressed their appreciation for the language proficiency and dedication of Sri Lankan trainees. They also reaffirmed their support for providing sustainable employment pathways in Japan, emphasizing the importance of maintaining high standards in training and placement.
This partnership between Sri Lanka and Japan has been in place since 2017, when the initial Memorandum of Understanding was signed to send technical trainees to Japan. In 2023, an additional agreement was introduced, allowing for the deployment of workers with specialized skills. This expansion has enabled more Sri Lankans to access employment opportunities in various sectors, including nursing, construction, manufacturing, automotive maintenance, and agriculture.
To date, 589 Sri Lankans have secured jobs in Japan through this partnership. Additionally, 43 skilled workers have been placed in the nursing and food service industries. These figures reflect the growing success of the program and the increasing demand for Sri Lankan labor in Japan.
Currently, around 80 trainees and 30 skilled workers are undergoing pre-departure training for future placements in Japan. This ongoing training ensures that participants are well-prepared to meet the expectations of the Japanese workforce and contribute effectively to their respective industries.
The collaboration between Sri Lanka and Japan continues to be a model of successful international cooperation. By focusing on skill development, language training, and cultural exchange, both countries are working together to create sustainable employment opportunities for young people. This initiative not only benefits individual workers but also strengthens the economic ties between Sri Lanka and Japan.
As the program continues to expand, it is expected that more Sri Lankans will have the opportunity to work and live in Japan, gaining valuable experience and contributing to the global economy. The success of this partnership serves as a testament to the potential of international collaboration in addressing employment challenges and fostering mutual growth.
