Otjihavera Marks 20 Years in Early September

The FNB Otjihavera Experience: A Celebration of Cycling and Community

From 5 to 7 September, the FNB Otjihavera Experience will bring together cyclists from across the region for a challenging and scenic mountain biking event. This year marks the 20th edition of the race, which has become a staple in Namibia’s sporting calendar. Participants will bike through the rugged terrain of the Otjihavera Mountains, experiencing both the natural beauty and the physical demands of the course.

The event began in 2005 when Tony and Sigi Bassingthwaighte, two passionate cyclists, explored the back roads of the Okapuka farm. They quickly realized that the area had potential as a unique cycling destination. “This would be the perfect place to host a mountain bike race,” Tony said at the time. Their vision led to the creation of the first trail along the railway, eventually connecting to Leopard Lodge and returning to Okapuka. This route became known as The Otjihavera Experience Route.

The name “Otjihavera” translates to “place where water crosses” in Otjiherero, reflecting the landscape’s natural and untamed charm. Over the years, the event has evolved into more than just a race. It has become a celebration of community, with local farmers playing an active role by setting up water points and cheering on participants. This sense of camaraderie has helped the event thrive, even during the challenges of the pandemic.

A Legacy of Growth and Support

For the past four years, FNB Namibia has been a key sponsor of the event, providing N$650,000 in support. This long-term partnership reflects the shared values of resilience, commitment, and growth. Hanso Diehl, co-founder of the Rock and Rut Mountain Bike Club Namibia, highlighted the significance of this support. “What we’ve been able to host with the backing of FNB is truly phenomenal,” he said. He added that this year’s 20th-anniversary celebration promises to be especially memorable, with a special event planned for 7 September after the final stage.

Rosa Kantema, FNB Namibia’s Sponsorships and Promotions Officer, emphasized the importance of such events in bringing people together. “The Otjihavera Experience is more than just a cycling event; it is a platform that unites people from all walks of life,” she explained. She noted the broader impact of sports, from grassroots development to professional opportunities, and how it fosters social cohesion and national pride.

Tauko Shilongo, President of the Namibia Cycling Federation, praised the role of corporate support in advancing the sport. “When corporates invest in sport, it shows that their work is worth supporting,” he said. He pointed out that cycling has the power to unite people and that the 20-year milestone of the Otjihavera Experience is a testament to the sport’s growth in the country.

Inclusivity and Participation

This year’s event is expected to attract between 150 and 200 competitors, making it accessible to riders of all ages and skill levels. The event continues to promote inclusivity, encouraging participation from both seasoned athletes and newcomers. The combination of challenge and fun makes it a family-friendly affair, reinforcing its status as a highlight of the national sporting calendar.

Several key figures were present at the event, including FNB Marketing Consultant Petelina Frans, Co-founders Tony and Sigi Bassingthwaighte, President Tauko Shilongo, Co-founders of Rock and Rut Mountain Bike Club Hanso Diehl and Nabil Robiati, FNB Sponsorship and Promotions Officer Rosa Kantema, Head of Private Client and Private Wealth at FNB Namibia Elize Smith, and FNB Marketing Coordinator Selma Moongo.

The FNB Otjihavera Experience stands as a remarkable example of how sports can bring communities together, celebrate resilience, and foster growth. As the event enters its 20th year, it continues to inspire and unite, proving that cycling is more than just a sport—it’s a way to connect, challenge, and grow.
