Heartwarming Pet Stories and the Winners of This Week’s “Pet of the Week”
This week has been filled with heartwarming stories about pets that have captured the attention of many. From incredible rescues of baby foxes and dogs to unexpected friendships between animals at an aquarium, there’s no shortage of touching moments in the world of pets. But these viral tales aren’t the only ones that have made a lasting impression. Thanks to the generous contributions from readers who shared videos and pictures of their beloved pets, we now have another exciting lineup for our “Pet of the Week” feature.
The Winner: A Chatty Parrot Who Became a Preacher
This week’s winner is a remarkable bird named Sonny, a nearly 2-year-old Indian ringneck parakeet owned by Cindy Drake and her family. What makes Sonny so special is his ability to speak and even quote scripture. According to Cindy, she and her family taught him several passages from the Bible, but what they didn’t expect was for him to take it upon himself to continue quoting them, almost like a preacher.
“He talks every day and especially loves to say ‘Hallelujah, praise the Lord, Amen,'” Cindy said. But Sonny isn’t just limited to religious phrases. He also enjoys saying “Good morning, Sunshine” and “What’s up, Buttercup?” His unique personality and constant chatter have brought joy and laughter to everyone around him.
The Finalists: A Touching Story of Love and Loss
One of the finalists is a story that highlights the deep bond between a person and their pet. Brenda Tucker Leonard shared how her father, who was always an animal lover, had a special connection with cats. At the age of 90, he wanted to own one more kitten, which led to a heartwarming chain of events. He first adopted a cat named Pepper, but the cat chose to be with Tucker Leonard instead, leading to a friendship where he helped mentor him in making jewelry with quahog shells. In return, Tucker surprised him with a kitten of his own.
After her father passed away in October, Brenda took in the kitten, Rocky, and now the two cats live together with her and the dogs. They are energetic, curious, and know their names. For Brenda, they are a daily reminder of her father’s lifelong love for animals.
A Joyful Dog Who Can’t Get Enough of Her Humans
Another finalist is Gus, a 3-year-old chocolate cocker spaniel known for being very affectionate and attention-seeking. Cindy Bigelow shared a series of photos showing how Gus constantly tries to get close to her. Whether she’s sitting in the recliner, kitchen, or bathroom, Gus will find a way to cozy up next to her.
In one photo, Cindy was sitting with her legs crossed, and Gus decided he needed to see what she was doing. He slowly pressed his face through the opening between her knee and leg, showing just how much he loves being near his humans.
A Protective Dog Who Becomes the Pool’s Lifeguard
The final story features a dog named Stella, who took it upon herself to be the “lifeguard” of the pool. Monica Blons shared a photo of Stella standing at the edge of a pop-up pool, peering down with her nose right up against a turtle’s back. The turtle, named Waffles, was sitting calmly in the water, but Stella wasn’t taking any chances.
Stella’s protective nature shows how pets can sometimes act as guardians, ensuring the safety of their human companions and other animals in their environment.
