Bread Recall in the U.S. Due to Undeclared Allergen

A significant recall of artisan bread has been issued in the United States after it was discovered that the product contains an undeclared allergen, which can lead to severe or life-threatening allergic reactions. The affected product is the Lewis Bake Ship Artisan Style 1/2 Loaf from Hartford Bakery, Inc. This recall involves six specific production lots.

The company announced that approximately 883 loaves from these six lots may contain hazelnuts. According to a notice shared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the packaging for these products only states “may contain tree nuts” but does not specifically mention hazelnuts. This oversight poses a risk to individuals with nut allergies or sensitivities.

Hartford Bakery conducted an investigation into the issue and found that there was a mix-up in the packaging process. The affected loaves were distributed to at least 2,500 stores across a dozen states, including major retailers like Walmart and Kroger. The states impacted include Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Ohio, Tennessee, and Wisconsin.

Each affected loaf is marked with specific lot codes: T10 174010206, T10 174010306, T10 174010406, T10 174020206, T10 174020306, or T10 174020406 on the front of the packaging. These loaves also have a best-by date of July 13, 2025, and a UPC code of 24126018152 printed at the bottom of the package.

Hartford Bakery reported that one customer experienced digestive discomfort after consuming the bread, and several others contacted the company after discovering hazelnuts in the product before eating it. However, no serious illnesses have been reported as a result of this recall.

Customers who have purchased the affected loaves are advised to return them for a refund. Those with questions or concerns should contact the company directly. Based in Evansville, Indiana, Hartford Bakery has been a family-owned business since 1925.

This recall follows a similar incident just two days earlier, when Mondelez Global LLC issued a recall for four cartons of Ritz Peanut Butter Cracker Sandwiches due to potential peanut contamination that was not disclosed on the labels.

Consumers are encouraged to check the details of any products they purchase and remain vigilant about food safety. If you believe you have purchased an affected product, take immediate steps to return it and seek further information from the manufacturer.
