Fiancé Saves Newborn by Removing Umbilical Cord from Neck

A Mother’s Unexpected Home Birth and the Heroic Role of Her Fiancé

A 27-year-old mother recently shared her harrowing experience of giving birth at home, with her fiancé playing a crucial role in delivering their baby. Iyanna Brown was expecting to give birth on July 7, but on June 26, she began experiencing mild cramping. Hours later, while preparing dinner, her water broke, signaling the start of labor.

At that point, Iyanna and her fiancé, Enoch Mitchell, who is 47 years old, started getting ready to go to the hospital. However, their baby had other plans. As Iyanna was pulling on her trousers, she suddenly felt her daughter’s head crowning. Recognizing the urgency of the situation, Enoch acted quickly, tearing off her trousers to help deliver their baby.

The situation took an even more alarming turn when their daughter was born with the umbilical cord wrapped twice around her neck. This condition can be extremely dangerous, as it may lead to anoxia, which can cause permanent brain damage or even stillbirth. Despite the risk, Enoch managed to unwrap the first loop, and Iyanna helped with the second. Moments later, their daughter let out her first cry.

“I really wasn’t expecting it to go that quickly,” Iyanna reflected. While she has given birth before, all previous deliveries were in a hospital setting with medication. For her fourth child, the plan was to have a water birth at the hospital. Just two days prior, she had attended a doctor’s appointment where she was told she was only one centimeter dilated. When the cramps started, she didn’t think she was in labor.

As the contractions became more consistent, Iyanna called a nurse who advised her to start thinking about coming in. Shortly after, her water broke, and from that point on, everything became a blur. She remembers feeling her daughter’s head in her trousers and yelling for Enoch.

After Enoch guided their daughter out, he noticed the umbilical cord was wrapped around her neck. “This was the really scary part because we didn’t have any assistance,” Iyanna said. “She was turning purple, and I was so proud of my man and how brave he was.”

Once the cord was removed and their daughter started to breathe, there was a sense of complete relief. However, Iyanna was also in shock over everything that had just happened. Enoch immediately called 911, and paramedics arrived soon after to check on both Iyanna and the baby. Maya, their daughter, was confirmed to be healthy, weighing 6 pounds and 12 ounces.

Iyanna expressed her amazement at getting through the experience without any pain medication and without tearing. “She’s been doing great ever since and is steadily gaining weight,” she said.

This unexpected home birth highlights the importance of being prepared for any situation during childbirth. It also showcases the strength and quick thinking of Enoch, who played a vital role in ensuring the safe delivery of his daughter. Their story serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of labor and the need for vigilance and support during such critical moments.
