Ohio Alum Returns Home to Lead Wrestling Team

A Homecoming for Tino Kusic: Bridgeport High’s New Wrestling Coach

Bridgeport High School is welcoming back one of its own to lead the Bulldogs wrestling team. Tino Kusic, a 2019 graduate, will step into the role of head coach this school year. His return to the school where he once competed and grew up marks a significant moment for the community and the athletic program.

Kusic was a standout multi-sport athlete during his time at Bridgeport, competing in wrestling, football, and baseball. After graduation, he pursued higher education, earning a bachelor’s degree in digital media design from West Liberty University. He is currently working toward a master’s degree in education, with a long-term goal of teaching digital media at the high school level. For now, he serves as a full-time substitute teacher in both middle and high schools, blending his passion for education with his love for athletics.

“It’s great to be back,” Kusic said. “This is where I grew up, and it’s a strong community.” His deep connection to Bridgeport is evident in his enthusiasm for returning to the school that shaped him.

With nearly two decades of experience in wrestling, starting from first grade, Kusic brings a wealth of knowledge and dedication to his new role. At West Liberty University, he worked closely with the wrestling team, focusing on digital media and photography. Now, he aims to combine his athletic background with leadership skills to inspire the next generation of wrestlers.

“I want to develop these kids’ character,” he explained. “I’ll be in the room with them every day, leading by example.” This commitment to mentorship is central to his coaching philosophy.

Kusic takes over a small but talented wrestling roster that includes two returning state qualifiers. He plans to expand the program by recruiting younger students, ensuring continued growth and success. In addition to coaching wrestling, he will also assist with the baseball team, encouraging athletes to explore multiple sports and benefit from cross-training.

He is particularly excited about “The Bridge,” a new state-funded multipurpose facility currently under construction on campus. Once completed, the facility will feature a training space and a health center weight room called “the Dog Pound.” This new space is expected to streamline logistics for the wrestling team, which currently trains off-site.

Superintendent Brent Ripley believes Kusic’s connection to the school and his strong work ethic make him an ideal choice for the role. “He came highly recommended,” Ripley said. “He’s committed to the district, and that’s something we value.”

Principal Jack Fisher also praised the decision to hire Kusic. “The staff and community have had nothing but positive things to say,” Fisher said. “His leadership and dedication will be great for our students.”

Kusic expressed his eagerness to learn from the faculty and contribute to the school that helped shape him. His journey from student-athlete to coach reflects a deep sense of purpose and a desire to give back to the community that supported him throughout his education and career.

As the new season approaches, the Bridgeport wrestling team and the broader school community are looking forward to the impact Kusic will have on their programs and the development of young athletes. His return is not just a homecoming, but a promising chapter for the future of Bridgeport High School.
