Strengthening Security in FCT: NSCDC Launches Emergency Response Team
In a significant move to tackle the persistent issues of insecurity and vandalism of public infrastructure in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has launched an Emergency Response Team under its FCT Command. This initiative marks a crucial step in enhancing the security framework of the region.
Training for a Specialized Unit
The NSCDC FCT Command has trained an additional 200 personnel in the use of weapons, preparing them for deployment in the newly formed emergency response team. These individuals are part of the third batch of trainees who recently completed their basic arms training at the Command Headquarters in Abuja.
Commandant of NSCDC FCT Command, Dr. Olusola Odumosu, highlighted the importance of this event during the passing out parade. He emphasized that the team is not just another ceremonial gathering but a strong commitment to improving internal security. “This third batch of graduands is a clear testament that we are not resting on our oars,” he stated. The training aims to ensure operational readiness and enhance the overall security architecture in the FCT.
Expanding Capabilities and Readiness
The first and second batches of trainees, consisting of 135 and 137 personnel respectively, have brought the total number of trained personnel in weapon handling to 472. This training spans across Area Commands and Divisions, aligning with the broader vision of creating a responsive, versatile, and elite Corps capable of engaging with the public effectively.
Dr. Odumosu noted that the Corps is not merely graduating personnel who have completed basic weapon handling training. Instead, they are launching an Emergency Response Team, which represents a key phase in the transformation of the Corps.
Support from Leadership
The Commandant commended the Commandant General of NSCDC, Ahmed Abubakar Audi, for his unwavering support and visionary guidance. He also expressed gratitude to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Barrister Nyesom Wike, for his continuous support and provision of operational equipment to enhance the work of NSCDC in FCT.
Celebrating Excellence and Collaboration
The passing out parade was attended by various dignitaries, including FCT Service Chiefs, who were impressed by the event featuring silent drill, unharmed combat, crack squad displays, and stripping and assembly of arms.
Brigadier General Adebisi Onasanya, Commander of the Presidential Guards Brigade, praised the resilience of the Corps and the excellent performance of the graduating officers during the POP display. He urged the officers to ensure that FCT is free from vandals and criminal elements. He also highlighted the positive collaboration between the NSCDC and other security agencies, noting the high level of excellence demonstrated in joint operations.
Mr. Olubiyi Sunday, representative of the FCT Minister and Director of Internal Security FCTA, congratulated the participants, describing them as high fliers. He assured continued partnership with the Command to ensure the safety and well-being of FCT residents.
A Step Forward in Security
The launch of the Emergency Response Team underscores the NSCDC’s commitment to proactive measures in addressing emerging security threats. With a focus on precision, discipline, and professionalism, the Corps is poised to make a significant impact in enhancing the security environment of the FCT. This initiative reflects a broader strategy to build a resilient and effective security force capable of meeting the challenges of today’s dynamic security landscape.
