Addressing Housing Challenges in the Northern Cape
In a significant step towards resolving the housing backlog in the Northern Cape, MEC Bentley Vass recently concluded a two-day visit to the Namakwa and Pixley ka Seme districts. During this time, he handed over 27 brand-new homes to grateful beneficiaries, marking an important milestone in the province’s efforts to provide shelter and dignity for all residents.
The visits, which took place from July 8 to 9, were part of the provincial government’s broader initiatives aimed at ensuring access to adequate housing. The Department of Co-operative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs (Coghsta) plays a central role in these efforts, working closely with local municipalities to deliver on housing commitments.
On Tuesday, July 8, Vass began the housing handovers in Calvinia, located within the Hantam Local Municipality under the Namakwa District. He was accompanied by the district executive mayor, Mervin Cloete, local mayor Koos Alexander, and other community leaders who joined in celebrating this achievement with the residents.
The following day, on Wednesday, July 9, the initiative continued in De Aar (Emthanjeni Local Municipality) and Colesberg (Umsobomvu Local Municipality), both situated in the Pixley ka Seme District. Vass was joined by municipal leaders, including Emthanjeni mayor Lulamile Nkumbi, Umsobomvu mayor Mzwandile Toto, and Speaker Nandipha Stafa, as they delivered new homes to more families in need.
During his address, Vass highlighted the importance of fast and high-quality construction, urging contractors to complete projects efficiently. This approach aims to prevent vandalism and ensure that beneficiaries can move into their new homes as soon as possible.
“We continue to work with speed to address housing challenges in the province. We have delivered houses to happy beneficiaries in three local municipalities in these two districts. We continue to urge all contractors across the province to deliver quality housing at a rapid pace so as to allow beneficiaries to receive their houses as per completion. This is also part of our strategy to curb vandalism and to ensure that beneficiaries take ownership of these beautiful houses immediately,” the MEC said.
Vass emphasized the constitutional right to adequate housing, referencing Section 26 of the Constitution. He noted that the province is committed to ensuring that everyone has access to housing within available resources. “We will be delivering more houses in other districts this month and beyond,” he added.
This initiative reflects the ongoing commitment of the provincial government to improve living conditions and address the housing backlog. By focusing on efficiency, quality, and community engagement, the government aims to create sustainable solutions that benefit residents in the long term.
The delivery of these homes not only provides immediate relief to families but also serves as a model for future housing projects. As the province continues its efforts, it remains focused on ensuring that every resident has the opportunity to live in a safe and secure environment. With continued collaboration between government departments, local leaders, and contractors, the vision of a better future for all in the Northern Cape is becoming increasingly achievable.
