Enhancing Public Awareness and Community Engagement in Power Infrastructure Protection

In a renewed effort to protect critical power infrastructure and ensure the safety of the public, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) recently organized a sensitisation programme in Kaduna. The initiative aimed to educate host communities about the dangers associated with constructing buildings under transmission lines and the growing problem of vandalism.

Engr Nasir Mansur S Fada, the general manager for the Kaduna Region, emphasized the vital role that community support plays in maintaining an uninterrupted power supply. He noted that new transformers have been installed in various locations, and several expansion and upgrade projects are currently underway. However, he underscored that these efforts can only be successful if local communities actively participate in protecting power installations.

“We are dedicated to improving power supply, but this goal cannot be achieved if our infrastructure is constantly threatened by vandals and illegal structures built under transmission lines,” Engr Fada stated during the event.

The programme attracted a wide range of participants, including traditional rulers, youth leaders, stakeholders, and members of the press. It was part of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission’s (NERC) directive and TCN’s broader commitment to addressing encroachment and infrastructure vandalism.

To raise awareness, heads of key technical departments, such as the System Lines and Electrical Departments, delivered presentations on the serious risks posed by encroachment on TCN’s Right of Way. They explained how illegal structures not only hinder maintenance work but also pose significant dangers to residents living too close to high-voltage lines.

The Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) Department provided essential guidance on how to protect lives and property by avoiding transmission corridors. They highlighted the potential hazards of being near high-voltage equipment, which can lead to electrocution, fires, and other life-threatening situations.

As part of its strategy to encourage community vigilance, TCN distributed hotline numbers to attendees: 07016839880, 09088380966, and 09088380967. These numbers were intended to empower the community to report any acts of vandalism or suspicious activity near transmission facilities. A representative from the Public Affairs Department remarked, “The community is our first line of defense. We are counting on traditional institutions, youth groups, and stakeholders to help us protect this infrastructure.”

The sensitisation programme concluded with an interactive session where participants shared their local challenges and pledged their cooperation. Community leaders praised the initiative and expressed their willingness to collaborate with TCN to ensure a safer and more stable power supply.

Key Points Highlighted During the Programme

  • Importance of Community Support: The success of power infrastructure projects depends heavily on the active participation and support of local communities.
  • Risks of Encroachment: Building structures under transmission lines poses serious risks, including hindrances to maintenance and potential dangers to nearby residents.
  • Safety Measures: Staying away from transmission corridors is crucial to prevent accidents caused by high-voltage equipment.
  • Reporting Mechanisms: TCN provided direct contact numbers for the community to report any suspicious activities or acts of vandalism.
  • Collaborative Efforts: The programme emphasized the need for collaboration between TCN and local stakeholders to enhance infrastructure protection and ensure a reliable power supply.

By fostering greater awareness and encouraging proactive engagement, TCN aims to create a safer environment for both the public and its critical power infrastructure. The initiative represents a step forward in building stronger relationships between the company and the communities it serves.
