Mahama Vows Ghana’s Leadership in Maritime Security Era

Ghana’s Vision for Maritime Leadership and Regional Prosperity

President John Dramani Mahama has emphasized Ghana’s commitment to spearheading a new era of maritime security, innovation, and economic growth. His remarks, delivered through his Chief of Staff, Mr. Julius Debrah, at the Fourth International Maritime Defence Exhibition and Conference (IMDEC) in Accra, highlighted the nation’s determination to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of West Africa’s maritime domain.

The President described the blue economy as a critical frontier for Ghana and the broader region. He stressed the importance of aligning national aspirations with investments in technology, collaboration, and human capacity development. This vision goes beyond protecting Ghana’s coastline; it aims to unlock the full economic potential of West Africa’s maritime resources, including oil and gas infrastructure, fishing, port modernization, and regional trade corridors.

Maritime security, according to President Mahama, is not only vital for safeguarding national assets but also for advancing the goals of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and the region’s industrial transformation. He emphasized that no single country can protect its maritime space in isolation. Instead, a shared security approach is necessary to address common challenges such as piracy, illicit trafficking, and environmental degradation in the Gulf of Guinea.

Ghana has pledged to deepen cooperation with neighboring countries and international allies to tackle these issues. The President outlined plans to enhance the capabilities of the Ghana Navy and allied agencies by investing in advanced surveillance systems, joint training programs, and research facilities. These efforts aim to build a more resilient and capable maritime force that can respond effectively to emerging threats.

In addition to strengthening security, President Mahama called on both public and private stakeholders to support Ghana’s strategic blueprint for the future. He reiterated the nation’s openness to strategic investments and joint ventures in key areas such as maritime logistics, shipbuilding, port infrastructure, and coastal tourism. These initiatives are expected to create jobs, stimulate economic growth, and position Ghana as a regional hub for maritime activities.

The President’s vision also includes fostering partnerships with regional organizations like the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the African Union, as well as global powers. These collaborations will focus on protecting shared waters and promoting peace and stability in the region. By working together, nations can ensure that their maritime spaces are secure, sustainable, and economically viable.

As the IMDEC 2025 conference continues, Ghana’s role as a beacon of stability and innovation in West Africa has once again come into focus. The President’s message of unity, collaboration, and forward-thinking strategies underscores the nation’s commitment to building a prosperous and secure future for all.

He concluded with a powerful call to action: “Our waters hold the promise of economic empowerment. Let us secure it. Let us protect it. And let us build a future upon it.” This statement reflects the deep conviction that Ghana’s maritime potential is not just an opportunity, but a responsibility that must be embraced with determination and collective effort.
