Nottingham’s New River Trent Crossing: A Major Engineering Project
A significant area has been set up for one of the world’s largest cranes to lift Nottingham’s newest River Trent crossing into place. The city council has confirmed that a crane platform has been established on the south bank of the river, as work continues on this ambitious structure.
This will be the first new crossing built over the Trent in Nottingham for more than 65 years. It aims to connect the Trent Basin off Daleside Road in Nottingham with an area near the Hook nature reserve in Lady Bay. The pedestrian and cycle crossing project is being funded by the government’s Transforming Cities Fund (TCF), which Nottingham and Derby successfully secured a joint £161 million from in 2020.
The bridge is expected to open in the spring of 2026. As progress continues, the city council has released an update on the scheme’s development. The authority states that the deep foundations for the bridge, known as piling, are well underway and are scheduled to be completed by mid-July.
Key Details About the Bridge Construction
The construction process involves several critical steps. One of the most notable aspects is the use of a massive crawler crane to lift the bridge into place. This crane is so large that it will arrive in Nottingham in five separate pieces, requiring a smaller crane to assemble it on-site.
To ensure the safety of workers, sheet piling is being installed along the south bank of the river. This will help prevent any accidental falls into the water. The initial framework of the bridge has already begun to take shape, with Briton Fabricators Ltd responsible for constructing the main structure.
Once the skeleton of the bridge is complete, it will be dismantled into six sections. These sections will then be painted an off-white color during the summer months. After this, the bridge will return to the city in August, where it will be reassembled on the banks of the Trent before being lifted into its final position in November.
