A Tale of Toddlers and Toyota
Lance Fredericks recalls a story from his niece’s early childhood, when she was around three years old and attending aftercare. Surrounded by other children her age, she found herself in a typical toddler debate. The conversation started with a simple claim about who had the strongest father, but it quickly escalated into an intense competition.

“My niece is older now, so please don’t let her know I told this story. You know how teenagers can be,” he says. “But back then, toddlers were just as competitive as they are today.”
The debate between my niece and another girl went something like this: “My daddy is stronger than your daddy,” one said. “No, my pappa is ‘a hundred’ strong,” replied my niece. “Well, my daddy is ‘a thousand’ strong,” countered the other. The conversation continued with each child trying to outdo the other, until someone declared, “My pappa will m**r your daddy!”
The staff member at the centre decided that it was time for nap, ending the lively discussion. This story serves as a reminder that debates about who is better—whether it’s sports teams, coffee brands, or cars—are often just opinions. However, sometimes the data speaks louder than words.

Toyota Leads the Way in South Africa’s Automotive Market
According to the latest national vehicle sales figures, Toyota South Africa Motors (TSAM) has firmly established itself as a leader in the South African automotive market. In June 2025, Toyota claimed nearly 25% of all new vehicle sales, maintaining its position despite a highly competitive environment.
This success is partly due to popular models such as the Hilux bakkie and the Corolla Cross, which continue to be trusted choices for both families and fleet buyers. The overall new vehicle market in South Africa saw a strong performance in June, with total domestic sales increasing by 18.7% compared to the same period last year.
Passenger car sales rose by more than 21%, while light commercial vehicles—including bakkies and taxis—increased by almost 15%. Toyota alone sold over 7,000 passenger cars and more than 3,000 Hiluxes during the month.
Fleet Sales and Top-Selling Models
Toyota also recorded its best month of 2025 for fleet sales, supplying nearly 4,000 vehicles to businesses. Popular models among fleet buyers included the Fortuner, Extra Cab Hilux, and Land Cruiser Pick-Up.
In the light commercial vehicle (LCV) segment, the Hilux remained the top seller, capturing 26.3% of the LCV market share. Meanwhile, the Corolla Cross made history by becoming South Africa’s top-selling passenger vehicle for the month. This achievement is impressive given that the Corolla Cross is produced locally.
While no toddler needed to shout “my pappa drives a Toyota” to win an argument, the numbers suggest that if they did, they would have a strong case.
