The Belmont County NAACP presented scholarships to local students Monday night as part of its annual scholarship initiative.
Three students were selected to receive $500 each to use toward higher education, Belmont County NAACP Scholarship Committee Chair Michael P. McCormick told 7News. McCormick said winners were selected based on essays they wrote, with scoring focused on originality, composition and subject matter.
“It was an equal opportunity event,” McCormick said. “We’re excited to share…their message with the public.”
Tev’n, who is a student at Martins Ferry High School, was one of the scholarship recipients. He told 7News about his submission.
“I basically had to write an essay about how I can make a difference…to help prevent racism in the school and community,” Tev’n said.
Kourtasia, who is now a cosmetology student, explained how she’s using her $500.
“I was just talking about what I want to do for school and what I was going to use—like if I got the money, what I would do with it—and it’s pretty much all just going to go to school.”
According to officials, the local NAACP chapter has been active for five years, and this marks the third year they have awarded scholarships to Belmont County students.
