Drivers in Lexington and Orangeburg counties may want to plan ahead as CSX Transportation begins a multi-week rail upgrade project that will temporarily close
dozens of railroad crossings.
Crews are replacing railroad ties and repaving crossings throughout both counties in an effort to improve long-term safety and efficiency. However, the ongoing work is already causing detours and delays for local drivers.
This week, crossings at Pallet Drive and Old Wire Road in Lexington are scheduled to close for track work. In August, crossings at Lightning Hill Road and Hayden Road will also shut down for upgrades.
“It makes it difficult to just go down the road to get to like the Dollar Tree,” said Samantha Skene, a Gaston resident. “The other day we had to take a 2-to-3-mile detour all around the town just to get 2 minutes down the road.”
Each crossing closure is expected to last up to five days, though not all closures will occur at once. Crews will move from location to location, so drivers are encouraged to check their routes daily.
To help motorists stay informed, CSX has
launched a real-time interactive map
. The tool allows users to click on any icon to see which crossings are open, closed or currently under construction. The map also indicates where traffic flaggers will be stationed to help guide vehicles safely around the work zones.
“I hope that it helps speed up the time that they have it blocked off,” Skene added. “Hopefully just not have it blocked off at all anymore.”
The rail upgrades are expected to be completed by Aug. 8, weather permitting. CSX says it’s working to minimize disruptions, especially in areas with limited access points.
