“Morocco is a rising power. The Kingdom is a bulwark of stability in Africa,” Murrison wrote in an article published in The Parliament Politics, the official magazine of the UK Parliament.
Morocco acts as a barrier against the threats posed by terrorist organizations, organized crime networks, and illegal migration long before these dangers can reach European shores, said the Conservative MP in the House of Commons, the lower house of the Westminster Parliament.
Given this extremely crucial role, “we must support this stable, moderate, and reliable African haven,” he continued.
Murrison, who also served as the UK Prime Minister’s Trade Envoy to Morocco, highlighted the recent decision by the British government to endorse the Moroccan autonomy plan for the Sahara.
“We are once again aligned with our closest allies, significantly strengthening not only one of our oldest diplomatic relationships but also the prospects for peace and prosperity in the region, while unlocking a wealth of trade and security opportunities,” he noted.
The UK formalized this support in a joint communiqué issued after the visit of British Foreign Secretary David Lammy to Morocco. The statement emphasized that the Moroccan autonomy plan is “the most credible, viable, and pragmatic basis” for resolving the regional dispute over the Sahara, he recalled.
Welcoming the significance of the Morocco-UK joint communiqué, Murrison said Rabat and London have opened a new chapter in their ties, establishing a strengthened “strategic partnership.”
This partnership covers many areas, including defense, security, agriculture, trade, renewable energy, water resilience, scientific research, human rights, and much more, he pointed out, adding that this is the greatest advance in relations between the two kingdoms, linked by a friendship of more than 800 years, since the signing of the UK-Morocco Association Agreement in 2019.
