Students Join ‘Future Legal Eagles’ Summer Camp

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) – Benedict College’s Pre-Law Center and the Transforming Generations Outreach Center held their Lawyers in Training or “L.I.T.” summer program this month.

Organizers of this program say it’s never too early to learn the ins and outs of a courtroom…and hope teaching kids about the law in a fun way will keep them on the right side.

“I want to be a family lawyer,” said rising high school junior Deonte Page.

“Something I went through back in my past that I was like, I don’t want anybody else to go through.”

46 middle school and high school-aged students prepped all the skills learned in the first law summer camp at Benedict College.

“This is our first Lawyer’s in Training program, ‘LIT’, program. And it’s been Lit,” said Benedict College Pre-Law professor, Dr. Ebony Green.

Coordinators say students attended five field trips in the two-week program.

“Everywhere from the coroner’s office. They’ve been to the Supreme Court to attend an oral hearing,” said Green.

Immersing in the world of lawyers, putting their skills to the test in a mock trial format. Allowing each group to argue different cases at the USC Rice School of Law.

Students say they’ve already taken a liking to the adrenaline rush of being in the courtroom.

“Cross-examination is my favorite. You get to dig deep, and if you say something really good, you get to say, ‘No further questions.’ And then the jury goes ‘Ooooh,’ and it’s good,” said rising sixth grader Savannah Butler.

Camp coordinators say they’re using this as a positive outlet for the youth over the summer.

“It’s critically important in this hour not to just say everything that’s wrong with our teenagers. What are we doing to provide an educational alternative? A positive alternative that’s going to pour back into them and help them become who we know that they can truly be,” said Transforming Generations Outreach Center’s Dr. Yasha Becton.

Benedict Pre-Law Students Served as counselors for the two-week camp.
