Trump Responds to Zohran Mamdani’s Historic Win in NYC Democratic Mayoral Primary

Tuesday’s win by Zohran Mamdani in the
Democratic primary for New York City mayor
caught the attention of politicians nationwide, and President Donald Trump was no exception.

Though former New York state governor Andrew Cuomo was long considered the frontrunner in the race, Mamdani was the
leading vote-getter
in the primary with 43.5% of the vote. Cuomo was a distant second with 36.4%. Since New York City used a ranked-choice system and no candidate received a majority of the vote, the race will go to a ranked-choice count. Cuomo, though, has
already conceded
.

Trump took to Truth Social, his social media platform, on Wednesday to weigh in. Not surprisingly, he wasn’t kind to Mamdani,
a 33-year-old democratic socialist
who has been a state assemblyman representing a district in Queens since 2021.

Trump
posted
, “It’s finally happened, the Democrats have crossed the line. Zohran Mamdani, a 100% Communist Lunatic, has just won the Dem Primary, and is on his way to becoming Mayor. We’ve had Radical Lefties before, but this is getting a little ridiculous.

“He looks TERRIBLE, his voice is grating, he’s not very smart, he’s got AOC+3, Dummies ALL, backing him, and even our Great Palestinian Senator, Cryin’ Chuck Schumer, is groveling over him. Yes, this is a big moment in the History of our Country!”

In
another post
just three minutes later, in a post maligning Reps. Jasmine Crockett and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Trump again mentioned Mamdani, calling him “our future Communist Mayor of New York City.”

Mamdani took his own shots at the president during the campaign. In a recent debate, Mamdani referred to himself as “Donald Trump’s worst nightmare, as a progressive Muslim immigrant who actually fights for the things that I believe in.”

“We know that the Trump Justice Department and the Trump administration as a whole is interested more in vindictiveness and persecution of political enemies than in anything to do with justice,” Mamdani said
in the debate
.

In November,
Mamdani will face
current New York Mayor Eric Adams, running as an independent, and GOP nominee Curtis Sliwa. Cuomo could also run as an independent, but has yet to make an announcement.
