‘Make sure you stay hydrated’: Meteorologists warn of upcoming heat wave at College World Series

Wednesday’s College World Series elimination game between Arkansas and Louisiana State University will bring nice weather. But fans will have to keep the upcoming heat wave in mind if their teams make it to this weekend.

Being from the South, fans KETV talked to say they can handle the sizzle that comes with CWS.

“Clouds come in, it rains, it clears up, it’s steamy. Same as Arkansas,” Karen Kepesky said.

Fans are still bracing to have to keep themselves cool though for the upcoming hot weather.

“Basically, make sure you stay hydrated during the game. And I got a fan, and I got a hand fan, and I got a regular fan,” said Jeff Eyanson.

KETV Meteorologists are forecasting temperatures to make it to the 100s on Friday and Saturday at least.

Daniel Vecellio at the University of Nebraska-Omaha says this is not the time to test your limits with the heat.

“We’re going to be at even more increased risk of heat-related illnesses and things like that this weekend,” Vecellio said.

The assistant professor of geography and geology studies how heat impacts the body. He said the first heat wave can be especially dangerous because our bodies have not acclimated to it yet.

“Once we go further on in the summer, once you get into July and August and you experience more and more of these, you know, 90-95 up to this weekend, nearing 100, days, the body starts to acclimate itself and take precautions on its own to better protect itself from the extreme heat,” Vecellio said.

With heat exhaustion, Vecellio said you’ll probably feel lightheaded, dizzy and dehydrated. With heat stroke, you can get those symptoms and become disoriented or not know where you are. If that’s the case with you or anyone around you, call 911 right away.

Vecellio said you should always be ready for the heat and prepared to protect yourself. That means drinking plenty of water, wearing protective clothing and wearing sunscreen.

Another tip Vecellio gave was to find shade whenever you can.
