The Maine Legislature is looking at a bill to create an online data privacy law, but the business community is opposing this measure and says this could hurt the small business community.
This bill would regulate the use of non-publicly available sensitive data of Maine consumers.

This includes someone’s race, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, citizenship or immigration status and much more.
But the business community says there are tools that small businesses use called remarketing.
“There’s a lot of small businesses that utilize something called remarketing, which is, a form of digital advertising. It basically allows if you search for a type of shoe on a website, then a local business can use remarketing to be able to target you sort of on different websites as a potential consumer of, being in the market for new shoes,” Dan Cashman with Sutherland Weston, said.
This bill is expected to be voted on on Tuesday night.
