In Washington, D.C., on Saturday, there will be a celebration and military parade for the Army’s 250th anniversary and President Donald Trump’s birthday. At the same time, “No Kings” rallies will be held across the country, including right here in Maine.
“In this country, we won’t go with the authoritarian approach that Trump is taking,” said Jim Gertmenian, who works with Indivisible Cumberland County and is organizing a protest in Portland. “The rallies are to bring people together … and it’s to remind Trump and his people that we’re out here, and we do have numbers of people who are standing against the kinds of things that he’s doing.”

No Kings Protests are planned for Portland, Wiscasset, and other communities across the state.
These will be part of a larger movement across the country
, against Trump and recent actions by his administration.
“It’s a number of issues,” Gertmenian explained. “It is economic justice, it is tax justice, and it is reproductive rights. It is certainly for innocent immigrants who are being heartlessly deported.”
Gertmenian said these events will be peaceful, and that violence will not be tolerated.
“We are aware of the planned protest and are prepared to respond to any issues that may arise to maintain safety for all involved,” a spokesperson for the Portland Police Department said.
