A fight to protect free breakfast and lunch for students is unfolding at the State Capitol in Lansing. It’s one of several programs on the chopping block for House Republicans. Their proposal would eliminate programs for student mental health and literacy – and take money from the free meals – adding it to a “per pupil” funding pot. It heads to the Democratic-controlled Senate.
A settlement has been reached in a lawsuit stemming from the bankruptcy of the State Theatre. It targeted Bay City and two businesses – saying they should pay for loans to the theater that were instead used to improve the nearby Wenonah Park Bandshell in 2020. Federal court records indicate the settlement was reached through mediation. City commissioners are expected to vote on the terms of the settlement during their meeting on Monday.
Former NFL star and CMU Chippewa Antonio Brown is wanted on a charge of attempted murder with a firearm. Police in Florida are looking for Brown after an alleged incident at a celebrity boxing event in May. Brown was detained by police following the event but was not arrested. He later posted to social media and said he was jumped by people trying to take his jewelry and would talk to his legal counsel about pressing charges.
A scam warning from the Midland County Sheriff’s Office. It said someone claiming to be “Officer Carter” is calling people and requesting bond payment for an inmate’s release through Zelle – a money transfer service. The agency said if you get a call like this you should hang up and call 9-1-1.
The 47th annual Saginaw Greek Festival kicks off today. There’ll be Greek food, drinks, live entertainment, and tours of Saint Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church. The event’s happening from noon to 11 p.m. today and Saturday – and noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday. Admission is free until 4 p.m. every day. After 4, it’s $3 for adults – and free for children 12 and under.
