Weekend Wins: Top 3 Must-Do Activities

Weekend Wins: Top 3 Must-Do Activities

Not to get political, but … this weekend certainly will be. There likely will be little overlap between people watching the military parade in Washington and attending No Kings protests such as the one in downtown Chico — both Saturday. So, if you’re among the people in either group, you’ve got a chunk of your weekend already planned.

For other people and other times, there’s this installment of Three Things. Here are a few suggestions for nonpartisan fun over the next few days. (These

should

be nonpartisan, anyway …)

Juneteenth

Quick history lesson: Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day, marks the end of slavery in the United States. The national holiday is June 19 — and, indeed, there are commemorations Thursday, including at DeGarmo Park in Chico.

First, though, comes one in Oroville. The 13th Annual Juneteenth Celebration organized by the African American Family & Cultural Center will run 3-7 p.m. Saturday at Martin Luther King Jr. Park, 2921 B St. Offerings include live music, dancing and food.

Chili cookoff

The
Bambi Inn
is a true local legend, and Saturday, it salutes other local legends. The Butte Meadows landmark will host the Veterans Chili Cookoff starting at noon at 7436 Humboldt Rd.

Along with the titular culinary creations, the event — dating back 30 years, give or take — will feature live music from the Skyway Blues Band.

Barn jams

Befitting the venue’s name, The Barn at Meriam Park has a pair of concerts on deck that tap into Americana roots.

This evening (Friday) at 6 p.m., the Whiskey River Band will bring its twist on country classics to the stage. Saturday at 7 p.m., Broken Compass Bluegrass shows the direction it’s taking its genre. Both shows at 1930 Market Place are all-ages events.
