MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) – Madison Metropolitan School District students are continuing to work hard in the classroom.
School district officials announced on Monday that MMSD saw an increase in the number of students taking advanced placement (AP) courses in Madison.
Two thousand and sixty-two students completed a combined total of 4,561 exams in May, which averages out to more than two tests per student. For MMSD, these numbers mark a record for both the number of individual test takers and the number of AP exams administered.

“We are proud to see such strong and growing interest in AP courses,” Cindy Green, MMSD’s assistant superintendent of teaching and learning, said. “These numbers speak not only to our students’ ambition, but also to the many educators and support systems behind them. AP participation opens doors for our students—academically, financially and in terms of college and career readiness.”
The Advanced Placement courses are designed similar to college-level classes. Students are required to participate in high-level content, independent study and critical thinking. Exams are scored on a scale of one to 5, with scores of a three or higher often award students college credit.
“This kind of sustained growth doesn’t happen by accident,” MMSD’s Director of Assessment Tim Peterson said. “It’s the result of a coordinated effort—driven by teachers, counselors, AVID leaders and our AP coordinators—to ensure students are challenged, supported and prepared. We’re excited to build on this momentum and continue expanding equitable access to AP opportunities.”
MMSD offers a variety of AP courses covering topics that include mathematics, science, English, social studies and music theory.
