Kenya has experienced increased adoption of electric vehicles not only for personal use but also within the public transport sector, thanks to deliberate government tax incentives
-
Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) will implement an updated Current Retail Selling Price (CRSP) list on July 1, 2025

The top 20 lowest-priced electric cars in Kenya include models from Toyota, Dongfeng, Peugeot, Nissan, Mitsubishi, Neta, and Vauxhall, among others
Elijah Ntongai, a journalist at .co.ke, has over four years of financial, business, and technology research and reporting experience, providing insights into Kenyan and global trends.
Kenya’s transition to electric mobility has accelerated sharply in the past two years, driven by a suite of fiscal, regulatory and infrastructure policies designed to lower the total cost of ownership.
Apart from the increased purchase and assembly of electric motor vehicles and personal cars, Kenya has reported an increase in electric vehicle adoption in the public transport sector.
This has been largely driven by deliberate government policies such as tax incentives.
Prices of electric vehicles in Kenya
Recently, the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) announced the release of an updated Current Retail Selling Price (CRSP) list, effective from July 1, 2025.
The CRSP plays a key role in determining the import duty, VAT, and excise duty payable on used vehicles entering Kenya.
The listed prices will be used to determine the taxes importers must pay at the point of entry, which is likely to result in higher prices for Kenyan consumers, as dealers may pass on the increased costs. Below are electric cars with the lowest retail prices according to the KRA’ CRSP:

Efforts to support e-mobility in Kenya
As reported earlier on .co.ke the Kenyan government is seeking to remove lithium batteries from the zero-rated VAT category through proposals in the Finance Bill 2025, a move that has been opposed by various stakeholders.
Kenya Power has also budgeted KSh 258 million over three years to roll out and operate charging hubs, initially focusing on Nairobi, Mombasa and Kisumu before expanding nationwide.
Additionally, Roam, a Kenyan electric motorcycle and bus manufacturer, partnered with Quickmart supermarket to install EV charging stations at its branches, aiming to expand e-mobility infrastructure across the country.
Moreover, Kenya’s draft National E-Mobility Policy (2024) and Electric Vehicle Charging and Battery Swapping Infrastructure Guidelines (2023) established a legal framework for harmonised county-level approvals, and set the stage for green number plates, priority parking and other privileges for EV owners.
