HASTINGS, Neb. (KSNB) – The Grand Island Police Department’s School Resource Officer Summer Youth Programs are kicking off this week at Barr Middle School.
The program is designed specifically for students entering sixth grade. Officer David Caldwell said that it offers a free, weeklong experience that blends fun activities with lessons in leadership, positive decision-making and community involvement.
“It’s pretty awesome to get the opportunity to let the kids see the spectrum of first responders across the city and across the state. It gives us the opportunity to show them what they do, show their equipment off and just give the kids a close-up view a lot of stuff they don’t get to see except driving by their homes,” Caldwell said.
The SRO team will host four more weeklong camps this summer. All camps run Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. and are held on the east side of Barr Middle School.
The camp is free to attend, but space is limited to 40 students per session. Interested families are encouraged to submit applications as soon as possible, with selections made on a first-come, first-served basis.
