Moroccan Military Upgrades with Cutting-Edge US M-ATV Armored Vehicles

The Royal Moroccan Armed Forces have taken delivery of their first fleet of M-ATV Standard Base (SXB) armored tactical vehicles, manufactured by U.S. defense contractor Oshkosh.

The vehicles are designed to enhance operational mobility, protection, and combat effectiveness for units deployed in Morocco’s southern and eastern regions, where terrain and security challenges are more complex.

Built for high-risk environments, the M-ATV is equipped with Plasan composite armor compliant with STANAG 4569 Level 4/3b/4 standards. This ensures protection against 14.5 mm armor-piercing rounds, 8 kg anti-tank mines, and artillery fragments from 30 meters. These defensive features make the vehicle well-suited for asymmetric warfare scenarios and border operations.

Each unit can be fitted with a range of weapon systems, including 7.62 mm M240 machine guns, 12.7 mm M2 heavy machine guns, 40 mm Mk19 grenade launchers, or BGM-71 TOW anti-tank missile systems. This modular armament offers adaptability against various threats.

Powered by a 370-horsepower turbocharged Caterpillar C7 diesel engine and a six-speed Allison 3500SP automatic transmission, the M-ATV reaches speeds of up to 105 km/h. Its TAK-4 independent suspension and robust design enable maneuverability over rough terrain, with a range of 510 kilometers.

The delivery is part of the U.S. Special Defense Acquisition Fund (SDAF), which facilitates rapid and secure military equipment transfers to key strategic allies without compromising U.S. force readiness.

Additionally, Morocco has ordered HET A1 heavy logistics tractors equipped with specialized 635NL trailers. Expected by summer 2025, these vehicles are built for transporting oversized military assets and come with 700-horsepower Caterpillar C18 engines, dual winches (each capable of pulling 25 tons), and modular protection systems under the Long-Term Armor Strategy.
