Community activists and residents in the Tagounite commune of Morocco’s Zagora province are raising urgent concerns over worsening water shortages, calling the situation “alarming” and demanding immediate government intervention.
With summer heat intensifying and Eid Al-Adha approaching, locals say infrastructure remains inadequate and long-term planning absent, leaving citizens without enough water to meet basic needs.
Mohamed Lamine Lbaid, a local activist, described the shortages to AR as abnormal given soaring temperatures, stressing that the crisis recurs every summer without resolution.
Residents have staged protests, but say authorities have yet to respond with concrete solutions.
Taha Khalifa, a resident, said water access is often limited to just three hours a day, with low pressure and poor quality.
He criticized the absence of local officials in addressing the issue, warning that frustration is mounting.
Mobile water tanks offer some relief but fall far short of demand. “We just want to live with dignity,” he said. “Water is a basic right.”
