A Celebration of Culture and Tradition
The 92nd Fiesta Topeka came to a close after five days filled with vibrant celebrations, and one of the highlights of the event was the performance by the Ballet Folklorico de Topeka dance company. This group brings the rich traditions of Mexican folk dance to life through traditional music, intricate costumes, and powerful performances that captivate audiences.
Ballet Folklórico is more than just a dance—it’s a celebration of heritage and identity. The performances showcase the diverse regional styles of Mexico, each with its own unique music, movements, and attire. For many in the community, the dance serves as a way to preserve and share their cultural roots.
Matthew Mosqueda, a veteran dancer with the company, expressed his passion for the art form. “It’s very beautiful, it’s nice, it’s bringing up a lot of the old traditions that are still carried through Mexico today, and we are just here making it more known in America,” he said. His words reflect the mission of the group: to educate and inspire others while honoring their cultural background.
The company includes dancers ranging from as young as eight years old to seasoned performers in their twenties and beyond. Many members are alumni who return specifically for the Fiesta performance, showing their deep connection to the tradition. Thalia Mosqueda, an alumna, shared her experience of returning to the group. “I loved it and I always told myself I was going to come back, but never really got the time, but now that I have the time, I am glad to be back and I am glad to be making new friends and being able to dance with my brother,” she said.
For many families, Ballet Folklórico is a cherished tradition passed down through generations. It’s not uncommon to see multiple family members performing together, reinforcing the sense of community and cultural pride.
One of the youngest participants this year was 9-year-old Ethan Schuetz, who took part in his second Fiesta performance. He spoke about how he got involved in the dance. “My sister liked to dance, so she joined, and I thought I would like to join, so I did,” he said. When asked about what he enjoys most, he replied, “The best part is being able to be in the costume. It’s really nice. It’s really hot, but it is really fun.”
The costumes, which often include elaborate fabrics, jewelry, and accessories, are a key part of the experience. While they can be heavy and warm, they also add to the visual spectacle of the performance. For the dancers, the effort is worth it.
Beyond the stage, the Ballet Folklórico de Topeka plays an important role in connecting people to their heritage. Through performances, workshops, and community events, the group continues to promote awareness and appreciation of Mexican culture.
As the Fiesta Topeka comes to an end, the energy and excitement of the Ballet Folklórico performance will remain with those who witnessed it. It’s a reminder of the power of tradition, the importance of family, and the joy of sharing culture with others.
