Exciting New Adventure Golf Course Set to Open in Sheerness

A £430,000 adventure golf course, which is part of a major revival project, is set to open its doors to the public. The 18-hole course will be located at Beachfields in Sheerness and promises to offer an exciting and unique experience for visitors. The construction of this attraction began in April and is being carried out by Rock Ventures, a contractor known for their expertise in adventure golf and water slides.

A Themed Experience with Local Flair

The course is designed with a strong Sheppey theme, incorporating well-known landmarks such as the Kingsferry Bridge, the SS Richard Montgomery shipwreck, and the Minster Abbey gatehouse. This thoughtful design reflects the rich heritage of the area and aims to create a fun and educational experience for all ages.

To ensure the course resonates with the local community, members of the public were invited to provide input on the design. Special sessions were held at several schools in the town, allowing children to contribute ideas and even name parts of the course. One of the most popular suggestions saw the planned whale feature renamed to “Sammy the Seal,” a tribute to the friendly animal that has become a familiar sight at The Leas in Minster.

Students from EKC Secondary School in Marine Parade proposed scorpion obstacles on a Blue Town wall for one of the holes, while a Rose Street Primary School pupil suggested replacing the lighthouse design with the historic Sheerness High Street clock tower. These contributions highlight the collaborative nature of the project and the importance of involving the local community in its development.

A Nod to Aviation Heritage

Earlier this year, artists’ drawings revealed the final style of the course, which includes nods to the Island’s aviation innovation heritage, such as the Wright Brothers’ plane. The total cost of the course is £429,425.91 and is part of a larger £20 million regeneration scheme awarded to Swale council as part of the government’s Levelling Up fund.

Updated pictures of the course and its progress have now been shared, showcasing the impressive work being done. The council described the course as a “centrepiece” featuring 18 holes celebrating the unique heritage and landmarks of the Island. The course is being installed alongside the soon-to-be extended and improved leisure centre, which is part of the government-funded Sheerness Revival project.

Opening Dates and Hours

The council has confirmed that the golf course will open to the public on Wednesday, July 23. Planning documents indicate that it will be open from 10am to 4pm from November to March, and from 10am to 8pm from April to October. This schedule ensures that the course is accessible throughout the year, offering opportunities for both locals and visitors to enjoy the new attraction.

Community Impact and Future Plans

Cllr Monique Bonney, chairwoman of the economy and property committee, highlighted the significance of the adventure golf course. She stated that it will be a great place for friends and families to meet and have fun outdoors. However, she emphasized that this is just a small part of the wider Sheerness Revival project.

Beachfields Park has been a leisure destination for over 100 years, drawing thousands to Sheerness with its beach, aquarena pool, and funfair. The new adventure golf course will add another chapter to this storied history. The ambitious project also aims to improve education, employability, health, and leisure on the Island through the improvement of infrastructure.

Broader Regeneration Efforts

The Sheerness Revival scheme includes the completion of three key projects: the regeneration of Beachfields, an extension of Sheppey College, and works at Masters House. The Sheppey Leisure Complex is set to have a two-storey side extension and an expanded GP facility on the ground floor. Additionally, the Beachfields paddling pool has been closed until next summer as it undergoes a facelift.

These developments mark a significant step forward in the revitalization of Sheerness, ensuring that the area continues to thrive and attract visitors for years to come.
