24-Hour Challenge Funds Hundreds for College

A 24-Hour Challenge for a Great Cause

A remarkable 24-hour challenge has successfully raised hundreds of pounds for a college and a charity, showcasing the power of community spirit and determination. The event took place at New College Worcester (NCW), a residential college that supports young people aged between 11 and 19 who are blind or partially sighted. This unique initiative aimed to not only raise funds but also to increase awareness about the college and Alström Syndrome UK, a charity dedicated to supporting those affected by a rare genetic condition.

The challenge was led by school therapist Peter and sixth form student Millie, who committed to completing 24 different activities within the span of 24 hours. Starting at 7:30 pm on Sunday, June 22, the marathon continued until 7:30 pm the following day. This non-stop event was designed to highlight the importance of teamwork, resilience, and the positive impact that collective effort can have on a cause.

Peter shared his thoughts on the experience, stating, “It was tough, but so worth it. Millie’s determination and positivity kept us both going. We wanted to do something that showed how much we care about the students here and what’s possible when we come together.” His words reflect the deep commitment and passion that both he and Millie brought to the challenge.

The entire NCW community supported the initiative, with students, staff, families, and supporters coming together to cheer Peter and Millie throughout the event. This sense of unity and support played a crucial role in keeping the pair motivated during the long hours of physical and mental exertion.

Millie described the experience as a “rollercoaster,” noting that while the early stages were manageable, the challenges increased significantly around 2:30 am. She said, “I really hit a wall—I was struggling to stay awake.” Despite the difficulties, she found joy in certain activities, particularly weight training, which she enjoys. The moment she went outside at sunrise to play football gave her a significant boost, and seeing people come to support them near the end was an incredible morale booster.

After finishing the challenge, Millie felt an overwhelming sense of accomplishment. “I was absolutely buzzing after we finished—so much adrenaline. I felt that rush right through until Wednesday. It felt so good to achieve what I set out to do.”

So far, the pair has managed to raise £758, which will go towards supporting the college’s mission and the work of Alström Syndrome UK. A spokesperson for NCW expressed their pride in Peter and Millie, stating, “Everyone at NCW is incredibly proud of Peter and Millie for their dedication, energy, and heart.”

Special recognition was also given to Waitrose on London Road for providing food and drink during the event, highlighting the importance of local support in making such initiatives successful. The funds raised will be used to support specialist equipment, experiences, and opportunities for students at NCW, as well as to continue the vital work of Alström Syndrome UK.

At NCW, each student follows a tailored programme that focuses on academic achievement, independent living skills, and extracurricular involvement. This approach helps build confidence and prepares students for life after college, ensuring they are equipped with the tools needed to succeed in the wider world. The success of this 24-hour challenge serves as a testament to the strength of the NCW community and the impact that collective efforts can have on achieving meaningful goals.
