Accra, June 24, GNA – Some 220 former Metroplitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) have declared their support for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as the party’s flagbearer in the 2028 general elections.

The endorsement comes ahead of the NPP’s internal elections slated for January 31, 2026, following a stakeholder meeting with Dr. Bawumia in Accra on Monday, June 23, 2025.
“After extensive consultations with all aspirants and a thorough assessment of their competence and vision, we were convinced that Dr. Bawumia stood out as the most suitable leader for both the party and the country,” the group, who served between 2017 and 2024, said.
They pledged their campaign experience and grassroots networks, noting: “Our endorsement is not merely symbolic; it is a strategic and operational commitment… We will deploy this experience to ensure Dr. Bawumia’s message resonates in every corner of Ghana.”

Dr. Bawumia was commended for his leadership in digital transformation, including the Ghana Card, mobile money interoperability, and paperless port systems, credited with improving national efficiency and formalisation.
The group also praised his inclusive leadership, describing him as “accessible, humble, and a unifier,” with strong appeal among the youth, grassroots, and floating voters.
The former MMDCEs argued that Dr. Bawumia’s prominence from the 2024 campaign positions the NPP advantageously.
They said electoral data suggests that beginning the campaign with a known candidate like Dr. Bawumia offered the NPP a significant head start.
The group hailed Dr. Baumia as a “leader who balances stability with fresh ideas” and committed to backing his bid.
“We are not just endorsing—we are activating our networks. We will mobilise at the grassroots in all 16 regions, leveraging our deep-rooted connections, engage in door-to-door campaigns, articulate Dr Bawumia’s vision, counter misinformation with facts about his achievements and potential, resource the campaign through fundraising and logistical support,” they said.
Their declaration follows a similar endorsement from 65 out of 88 NPP Members of Parliament last week.
