20 New Little Island Homes Overlooking Cork Harbour

New Housing Developments in East Cork

Plans have been submitted to Cork County Council for the construction of 20 new homes in East Cork. The development, proposed by local developers Danemont Ltd, aims to transform a former warehouse site in Little Island into a residential area offering family homes with views of the harbour. If approved, an existing workshop and office building on the Clash Road site will be demolished to make way for the new project.

The Ballytrasna residential project includes 18 townhouses and two semi-detached homes. All properties will be two-storey buildings, featuring between two and four bedrooms. The development also includes plans for a new footpath and pedestrian crossing from the estate to the entrance of the Carrigrennan playground, located just across the road.

The site is situated to the southeast of Little Island, near the Cork Golf Club. It is approximately 3.5 km east of the Dunkettle Interchange and the Jack Lynch tunnel, making it easily accessible for commuters. The location offers a mix of convenience and tranquillity, appealing to those seeking a more secluded part of the island.

This is not the first time Danemont Ltd has proposed housing developments on this site. Last year, the company was denied plans for 14 houses due to concerns over surface water management. However, the latest proposal addresses these issues through pre-planning consultations, increasing the chances of approval.

The new housing could provide a significant boost to the local housing market in Little Island. The site is close to a hidden gem in the area—the Carrigrennan walk. This scenic 2.5km stroll offers breathtaking views and picturesque pathways, making it a popular spot for residents and visitors alike.

Affordable Housing Scheme Unveiled

In addition to the new developments in Little Island, the City Council has introduced a new ‘affordable’ housing scheme. This initiative aims to address the ongoing demand for much-needed housing in the region. The scheme features nine new family homes at Carraig Dún, Killeens, with prices capped at €375,000.

Applications for the affordable housing scheme will open on August 6th at 12 p.m. Each property will be priced 20% below the open market value, though the final price may vary depending on the purchasing power of the applicants. This initiative is expected to help families who might otherwise struggle to afford housing in the area.

The affordable housing scheme is part of a broader effort to ensure that housing remains accessible to all residents. By offering lower prices and flexible payment options, the council hopes to support local communities and encourage long-term residency.

Future of Housing in Cork

With the proposed developments in Little Island and the new affordable housing scheme, Cork is taking steps to meet the growing demand for housing. These projects highlight the importance of thoughtful planning and community engagement in creating sustainable living environments.

As the city continues to grow, it is essential to balance development with the preservation of natural and recreational spaces. The inclusion of amenities like the Carrigrennan walk demonstrates a commitment to enhancing the quality of life for residents.
